Think about your child reading?

  • Do they struggle with the difference between a hard or soft c or g? What about a long or short vowel?

Meet Flippy Dolphin

Learning to read can be confusing since many letters, or letter combinations, have multiple sounds.

If your child is struggling with sounding out a word, have them try the “other” sound for a letter or letter combination.

  • “G” can have a hard sound as in grapes or a soft sound as in gym. If one sound isn’t working, have them try the other.
  • “C” can have a hard sound as in crab or a soft sound as in cinema. If one sound isn’t working, have them try the other.
  • Vowels all have a long sound (their name) or a short sound (their sound). If they use the wrong sound, have them try the other one.

Sometimes they read a word and use the wrong sound even though the word is correct (read vs read). See if they notice that the word does not make sense and if they do not self-correct, then correct them.
